Revisiting Sexualities & Health
By: Minichiello, Victor (ed.); Plummer, David (ed.)
Published by: eContent Management, Pty Ltd
Sexual health involves complex and interdependent relationships between biology, psychology and socio-historical-cultural factors. Late modernity has witnessed a growing critique of discourses which frame sex as deviance, or view sexuality and identity as essential and normative rather than as multiple and diverse, or which treat sex as a public health problem. Through understanding sexualities we can obtain a better understanding of individual and societal health, the diversity of sexualities and the importance of sexual expression on intimacy, relationships, identity, quality of life and health. This provides insights into the sexuality, experiences and rights of groups previously ignored or excluded. Papers in this special issue of Health Sociology Review* extend this knowledge and offer insights on aspects of sexuality, identity and health across the life span, focusing on diverse populations, groups and sexualities - addressing experiences and rights of groups often ignored in public health policy.

Safeguarding the Health Sector in Times of Macroeconomic Instability
By: Haddad, Slim (ed.); Bar, Enis (ed.); Narayana, Delampady (ed.)
Published by: International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
Safeguarding the Health Sector in Times of Macroeconomic Instability presents the results of an international initiative to document the effects of how health systems in the developing world have responded to macroeconomic austerity and adjustment measures. Are these systems flexible and resilient to changes or are they rigid? In which circumstances and under which conditions do health systems respond favourably or unfavourably? What are the success stories? Country studies from Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, India, Thailand, Mexico, and Colombia discuss lessons learned and identify policy measures for safeguarding the health sector. This book provides a fresh look at the relationships between. macroeconomic policy and interventions, health sector reform, and the health system in general, presenting new and detailed observations to inform policy choices within the health-care sector worldwide. It is unique in its focus on health systems and services (including financing, quality, accessibility, and utilization), rather than on health status. It will be of interest to academics, researchers, and students studying or active in health sciences and international development studies; professionals and practitioners in donor organizations, development organizations, and NGOs worldwide; and policy advisors and decision-makers in the health-care sector.

Salud
By: Lebel, Jean
Published by: International Development Research Centre

Social Inequalities and Cancer
By: Kogevinas, M.; Pearce, N.; Susser, M.; Boffetta, P.
Published by: International Agency for Research on Cancer
In both industrialized and lessdeveloped societies, cancer incidence and survival are related to socioeconomic factors. This fascinating volume, the first to examine the magnitude of these socioeconomic differences in relation to cancer, provides vital information for all those interested in public health. Cancer incidence and survival are related to socioeconomic status in both industrialized and less developed countries. These differences can be explained, in part, by known risk factors, particularly tobacco smoke, occupational exposures, reproductive behaviour, diet and biological agents. The volume presents general considerations, evidence of social inequalities in cancer, explanations for social inequalities in cancer, and socioeconomic differences in health care.

The solid facts - promoting physical activity and active living in urban environments - the role of local governments
By: Wilkinson, R.
Published by: World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe
disparity has drawn attention to the remarkable sensitivity of health to the social environment. This publication examines this social gradient in health, and explains how psychological and social influences affect physical health and longevity. It then looks at what is known about the most important social determinants of health today, and the role that public policy can play in shaping a social environment that is more conducive to better health. This second edition relies on the most up-to-date sources in its selection and description of the main social determinants of health in our society today. Key research sources are given for each: stress, early life, social exclusion, working conditions, unemployment, social support, addiction, healthy food and transport policy. Policy and action for health need to address the social determinants of health, attacking the causes of ill health before they can lead to problems. This is a challenging task for both decision-makers and public health actors and advocates. This publication provides the facts and the policy options that will enable them to act.

Autoimmune Epidemic
By: Nakazawa, Donna Jackson; Kerr, Douglas
Published by: TOUCHSTONE
From the foreword by Dr. Douglas Kerr, Director, Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center. "The Autoimmune Epidemic by Donna Jackson Nakazawa is an astounding book....It is the kind of book that will rivet you and scare you. It will make you angry. It will amaze you with the courage of some of the people described in the book...The Autoimmune Epidemic is every bit as compelling as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle...It is also every bit as necessary as An Inconvenient Truth.... You will leave this book with no reservations about the veracity of the conclusions: put simply, there is no doubt that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and increasing environmental exposures of toxins and chemicals is fueling this rise. The research is sound. The conclusions unassailable.... Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a necessary first step. Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a life-altering event. It needs to be."
