Candid Science II
By: Hargittai, I; Hargittai, M (ed.)
Published by: Imperial College Press
This invaluable book contains 36 interviews, including 26 with Nobel laureates. It presents a cross-section of biomedical science, a field that has been dominant in science for the past half century. The in-depth conversations cover important research areas and discoveries, as well as the roads to these discoveries, including aspects of the scientists work that never saw publication. They also bring out the humanness of the famous scientists - the reader learns about their backgrounds, aspirations, failings, and triumphs. The book is illustrated with snapshots of the conversations and photos provided by the interviewees. It is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Candid Science: Conversations with Famous Chemists , by the same author. Readership: Biomedical scientists, biochemists, and general readers.

Carbon-13 NMR Spectroscopy of Biological Systems
By: Beckmann, Nicolau
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
This book is intended to provide an in-depth understanding of 13C NMR as a tool in biological research. 13C NMR has provided unique information concerning complex biological systems, from proteins and nucleic acids to animals and humans. The subjects addressed include multidimensional heteronuclear techniques for structural studies of molecules in the liquid and solid states, the investigation of interactions in model membranes, the elucidation of metabolic pathways in vitro and in vivo on animals, and noninvasive metabolic studies performed on humans. The book is a unique mix of NMR methods and biological applications which makes it a convenient reference for those interested in research in this interdisciplinary area of physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine.

Cell Chemistry and Physiology, Part II
By: Bittar, Edward
Published by: Elsevier Science
This volume illustrates the extent to which the traditional distinction between biochemical and physiological processes is being obliterated by molecular biology. It can hardly be doubted that the revolution in cell and molecular biology is leading to core knowledge that provides an outline of the integrative and reductionist approach. We view this as the beginning of a new era, that of the integration of learning. As in the preceding volumes, the choice of topics has been deliberate not only because of the need to keep the volume within reasonable bounds but also because of the need to avoid information over-load. Several relevant topics are dealt with in other modules; for example, the role of G proteins in transmembrane signalling is covered in the Membranes and Cell Signalling module (i.e., Volume 7). Omissions are of course inevitable but they are minor. A case in point is the subject of phosphatases, the treatment of which does not take into account calcineurin. One of the key functions of this Ca2+ -activated protein phosphatase that is also regulated by calmodulin is to desphosphorylate voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. The mere recognition of such omissions before or after consulting textbooks and journals should be a spur to a more complete discussion by the student of the subject in a small group teaching setting.

Chemotaxis
By: Eisenbach, Michael
Published by: World Scientific
How do white blood cells identify and move to fight invading
microorganisms? How do metastatic cancer cells find their target
organ? How are sperm cells guided to the egg to fertilize it? How do
unicellular organisms find food and avoid noxious substances? By
chemotaxis is the common answer to all these questions. Chemotaxis
the response of cells to chemical stimuli by directed movement
is one of the most basic and fascinating processes in nature,
involved in both health and disease.
