Earthquake Thermodynamics and Phase Transformation in the Earth's Interior
By: Teisseyre, Roman; Majewski, Eugeniusz; Dmowska, Renata
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
A group of distinguished scientists contributes to the foundations of a new discipline in Earth sciences: earthquake thermodynamics and thermodynamics of formation of the Earth's interior structures. The predictive powers of thermodynamics are so great that those aspiring to model earthquake and the Earth's interior will certainly wish to be able to use the theory. Thermodynamics is our only method of understanding and predicting the behavior of many environmental, atmospheric, and geological processes. The need for Earth scientists to develop a functional knowledge of thermodynamic concepts and methodology is therefore urgent. Sources of an entropy increase the dissipative and self-organizing systems driving the evolution and dynamics of the Universe and Earth through irreversible processes. The non-linear interactions lead to the formation of fractal structures. From the structural phase transformations the important interior boundaries emerge. Non-linear interactions between the defects in solids lead the authors to develop the physics of continua with a dense distribution of defects. Disclinations and dislocations interact during a slow evolution as well as during rapid dynamic events, like earthquakes. Splitting the dynamic processes into the 2D fault done and 3D surrounding space brings a new tool for describing the slip nucleation and propagation along the earthquake faults. Seismic efficiency, rupture velocity, and complexity of seismic source zone are considered from different points of view, fracture band earthquake model is developed on the basis of thermodynamics of line defects, like dislocations. Earthquake thermodynamics offers us a microscopic model of earthquake sources. Physics of defects helps the authors decscribe and explain a number of precursory phenomena caused by the buildup of stresses. Anomalies in electric polarization and electromagnetic radiation prior to earthquakes are considered from this point of view. Through the thermodyna

Ecological Engineering: Principles and Practice
By: Kangas, Patrick
Published by: CRC Press
Less expensive and more environmentally appropriate than conventional engineering approaches, constructed ecosystems are a promising technology for environmental problem solving. Undergraduates, graduate students, and working professionals need an introductory text that details the biology and ecology of this rapidly developing discipline, known as ecological engineering. Ecological Engineering: Principles and Practice fills this need by describing ecological concepts and theory and demonstrating their application to constructed ecosystems. It presents highly visible and widespread applications of ecological engineering, including treatment wetlands, microcosms, composting systems, restoration ecology, soil bioengineering, and invasive species control.

Efficient Management of Wastewater
By: Al Baz, Ismail (ed.); Otterpohl, Ralf (ed.); Wendland, Claudia (ed.)
Published by: Springer
Water reuse management is one of the challenges all water scarce countries have to deal with in the coming decades. Many Mediterranean countries are currently facing serious problems regarding the supply of sufficient water resources to cover their increasing water supply demands. In the year 2025, countries like Jordan, Israel and Palestine will have less than 150 cubic meters per capita and year. Other countries like Syria and Lebanon, at present classified as "water rich," will also face similar water stress problems during the next two decades. Therefore, these countries need water strategies that have to take into account alternative measures to cope with this situation. Water reuse is one of the essential options to be considered for the development of national water policies and strategies. The present book highlights non-conventional solutions within the field of wastewater treatment and reuse predominantly for professionals and decision makers. It focuses on technologies like anaerobic and extensive treatment of municipal, domestic wastewater and grey water which are reliable, sustainable, low cost and suitable for rural and sub urban areas. Additionally, particular innovative on site concepts are presented. Within water reuse as overall objective, guidelines and recommendations as well as social aspects of water reuse are presented and discussed.

Emergency Response Planning
By: Erickson, Paul A.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
Emergencies wreak havoc on businesses and governments on a daily basis. Whether it is a hurricane pounding a coastal community, a terrorist attack on a company's headquarters, or a hazardous chemical spill at a local school, the results can be loss of life, health, and property. How can you prevent or reduce the effects of such occurrences? By planning ahead. Emergency Response Planning is designed to help corporate and municipal managers quickly understand their roles in proactive and reactive emergency management. Author Paul Erickson shows how to develop partnerships with federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as community groups in order to prevent, prepare for, and respond to natural disasters and manmade emergencies. Emergency Response Planning provides essential information to help you comply with government regulations, design an emergency response plan, train personnel, use the proper safety equipment, safeguard information systems, and resume normal operations after an emergency as quickly as possible. It will also help consultants design emergency response plans for their clients, and provide practical information for students studying business continuity and emergency issues.
