Mura Solwata Kosker
By: Ellie Gaffney AM
Published by: eContent Management, Pty Ltd

I was born on 18 August 1932. I am a Torres Strait ‘Solwata Woman’, Wagadagum Tribe, of the Kadal and Dangal Totems. My father was Tomi Loban from Banda Neira, Indonesia. He was a pearl shell grader on Thursday Island. My mother was Geti Loban (nee Summers) from Mabuiag Island, Torres Strait. This book I am writing is about the journey I wish to share with readers. It has been 24 years since my first and only book Somebody Now was published and I have been approached by young Torres Strait women to document achievements since then. My family also have encouraged me to try and accept this challenge because my medical problems restrict me, with time spent in hospital, and my physical and mental capacity of endurance. So, thank you Sylvia Tabuai for raising the issue. My book is based on memory and reflection. There are many issues still facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and I must put down my thoughts about them. I leave behind in this book some ideas for the future so that others may learn from them. Ellie Gaffney AM more...

National Minorities and Citizenship Rights in Lithuania, 1988-93
By: Popovski, Vesna; Kolankiewicz, Prof George
Published by: Palgrave

This book examines the emergence of nationalism in Lithuania, specifically the Lithuanian national movement, known as Sajudis, and its approach towards the citizenship rights of national minorities. The study concentrates on the period between 1988 and 1993 when the national majority and minorities began forming and debating citizenship rights. The question of citizenship rights of national minorities is not ordinarily viewed as a problem with regard to Lithuania and there has consequently been minimal attention devoted to this topic. This book addresses this neglect and brings the underlying assumptions into critical perspective by analysing the Lithuanian situation not just according to the letter of the law but also in terms of how these laws were implemented and how the minorities responded to them.In doing so, the book explores the conflict which emerged between the growing national movement and the ideals of citizenship such as multicultural pluralism, diversity and heterogeneity. The book therefore has relevance to all those who are interested in postcommunist societies; and in particular the tensions that frequently develop between nationalism and citizenship. more...

A comprehensive comparative study of the distinct ideas and political arguments that have shaped French and British policies towards their ethnic minorities, and the effects of these intellectual frameworks at local, national and European levels. Charting the politics and events that brought the respective institutional solutions together, the author sets out the divergent conceptualisations of citizenship, nationality, pluralism, autonomy, public order and tolerance that make up the national 'philosophies' in the two countries - republican integration in France and multicultural race relations in Britain. This new edition, published in paperback, contains a new preface bringing the volume up-to-date in the light of new legislation and progress. more...
