Beyond Partial Differential Equations
By: Beyer, Horst Reinhard
Published by: Springer

The present volume is self-contained and introduces to the treatment of linear and nonlinear (quasi-linear) abstract evolution equations by methods from the theory of strongly continuous semigroups. The theoretical part is accessible to graduate students with basic knowledge in functional analysis. Only some examples require more specialized knowledge from the spectral theory of linear, self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces. Particular stress is on equations of the hyperbolic type since considerably less often treated in the literature. Also, evolution equations from fundamental physics need to be compatible with the theory of special relativity and therefore are of hyperbolic type. Throughout, detailed applications are given to hyperbolic partial differential equations occurring in problems of current theoretical physics, in particular to Hermitian hyperbolic systems. This volume is thus also of interest to readers from theoretical physics. more...

Advanced Courses Of Mathematical Analysis I - Proceedings Of The First International School
By: Aizpuru-Tomás, A (ed.); León-Saavedra, F (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific

This volume consists of a collection of articles from experts with a rich research and educational experience. The contributors of this volume are: Y Benyamini, M González, V Müller, S Reich, E Matouskova, A J Zaslavski and A R Palacios. Each of their work is invaluable. For example, Benyamini’s is the only updated survey of the exciting and active area of the classification of Banach spaces under uniformly continuous maps while González’s article is a pioneer introduction to the theory of local duality for Banach spaces. more...

Advances In Deterministic And Stochastic Analysis
By: Chuong, by N M (ed.); Ciarlet, P G (ed.); Lax, P (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific

This volume collects articles in pure and applied analysis, partial differential equations, geometric analysis and stochastic and infinite-dimensional analysis. In particular, the contributors discuss integral and pseudo-differential operators, which play an important role in partial differential equations. Other methods of solving the partial differential equations are considered, such as the min-max approach to variational problems and boundary value problems. The foundations of quantum mechanics from the viewpoints of infinite-dimensional spaces and Bell's inequality and contraction are also mentioned. more...

Amplitude Equations For Stochastic Partial Differential Equations
By: Blömker, Dirk
Published by: World Scientific

Rigorous error estimates for amplitude equations are well known for deterministic PDEs, and there is a large body of literature over the past two decades. However, there seems to be a lack of literature for stochastic equations, although the theory is being successfully used in the applied community, such as for convective instabilities, without reliable error estimates at hand. This book is the first step in closing this gap. The author provides details about the reduction of dynamics to more simpler equations via amplitude or modulation equations, which relies on the natural separation of time-scales present near a change of stability. For students, the book provides a lucid introduction to the subject highlighting the new tools necessary for stochastic equations, while serving as an excellent guide to recent research. more...

Introduction to Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations
By: Logan, J. David
Published by: Wiley-Interscience

An Introduction to Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations is a textbook on nonlinear partial differential equations. It is technique oriented with an emphasis on applications and is designed to build a foundation for studying advanced treatises in the field. The Second Edition features an updated bibliography as well as an increase in the number of exercises. All software references have been updated with the latest version of MATLAB®, the corresponding graphics have also been updated using MATLAB®. An increased focus on hydrogeology and mathematical biology is evident in the new edition. Hints and solutions to selected exercises have been added to the back of the book. The book emphasizes hyperbolic and parabolic problems and includes a range of applications in the following areas: biology, chemistry, porous media, biological problems, combustion and detonation, traffic flow, water waves, plug flow reactors, and heat transfer. Early chapters offer insight into how to understand problems involving phenomena, how specific equations describe evolutionary processes, and what the terms in such equations describe physically. When discussing wave propagination and hyperbolic problems, the text develops algorithms to solve first-order equations and highlights the concept of the weak solution. The material in the book is presented in such a manner that many of the chapters are independent, which allows for instructors' flexibility to design several courses around various topics. more...
