The Chilean Labor Market
By: Sehnbruch, Kirsten
Published by: Palgrave Macmillan

Kirsten Sehnbruch uses the case study of Chile to show the failures and inner-working of neo-liberal labour policy. She shows in detail what the real policy issue should be, namely the creation of proper institutions and of a corps of competent professionals with relevant skills and powers to operate them. This is extremely timely work, in that institutions are a matter of enormous concern in the international development community of policy-makers, who are desperate to make current orthodoxy work in terms of sustainability, the quality of life, human development and other dimensions beyond GDP growth. more...

The China Price
By: Harney, Alexandra
Published by: The Penguin Group (USA)

A landmark eyewitness exposé of how China's factory economy competes for Western business by selling out its workers, its environment, and its future. In The China Price, acclaimed Financial Times correspondent Alex Harney uncovers the truth about how China is able to offer such amazingly low prices to the rest of the world. What she has discovered is a brutal, Hobbesian world in which intense pricing pressure from Western companies combines with ubiquitous corruption and a lack of transparency to exact an unseen and unconscionable toll in human misery and environmental damage. In a way, Harney shows, what goes on in China is inevitable. In a country with almost no transparency, where graft is institutionalized and workers have little recourse to the rule of law, incentives to lie about business practices vastly outweigh incentives to tell the truth. Harney reveals that despite a decade of monitoring factories, outsiders all too often have no idea of the conditions under which goods from China are made. She exposes the widespread practice of using a dummy or model factory as a company's false window out to the world, concealing a vast number of illegal factories operating completely off the books. Some Western companies are better than others about sniffing out such deception, but too many are perfectly happy to embrace plausible deniability as long as the prices remain so low. And in the gold-rush atmosphere that's infected the country, in which everyone is clamoring to get rich at once and corruption is rampant, it's almost impossible for the Chinese government's own underfunded regulatory mechanisms to do much good at all. But perhaps the most important revelation in The China Price is how fast change is coming, one way or another. A generation of Chinese flocked from the rural interior of the country to its coastline, where its factory work largely is, in the largest mass migration in human history. But that migration has slowed dramatic more...

A Country That Works
By: Stern, Andy
Published by: FREE PRESS IMPRINT

In his eye-opening diagnosis that makes the urgency of the threats vividly clear, Stern shows that Americans are contending with the most disruptive economic upheaval in the world economy since the Industrial Revolution. Yet, in the face of this daunting challenge, the American system simply isn't working well enough for most of us. Stern powerfully portrays how with the pace of globalization relentlessly quickening, the competitive pressures on our jobs and quality of life are heating up even more, especially as housing, health care, and oil prices skyrocket. While CEO salaries soar and business and the wealthy are handed plentiful tax shelters, the incomes of both white-collar and blue-collar workers stagnate, leaving most Americans struggling to pay off ever-escalating debt, instead of saving for retirement. The plain fact is that our system is out of whack, serving the interests of the top sliver of the most wealthy while putting the squeeze on the rest of us. more...

Effective Resolution of Collective Labour Disputes
By: Brenninkmeijer, A.F.M. (ed.); Jagtenberg, R. (ed.); De Roo, A (ed.)
Published by: Europa Law Publishing

In the early summer of 2005, an international expert meeting was convened in The Hague to share and compare national experiences with conciliation and mediation as methods for resolving collective labour disputes. Both the European Union and the Council of Europe have committed themselves to promoting these methods, which aim to assist disputants in finding creative, negotiated solutions, preserving their long-standing relationships. Ideally, trade unions and employers (associations) have such long-standing relationships, and many European countries have specialised conciliation officers or mediation services operating in this area. The expert meeting brought together a mix of leading mediators and academics from Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Spain and the Netherlands to share their experiences and to exchange their views on the changes permeating Europe today: the rise of transnational labour disputes, the decentralization of collective bargaining, the process of de-unification, the joining of the EU by new member states without a social dialogue tradition, and the insights generated by the emerging science of principled bargaining, facilitative mediation and conflict management. All these developments are likely to increase the demand for expert mediation services to assist more often less experienced negotiators. Thereby, the very nature of mediation may gradually change. The national reports in this book are preceded by an introduction, a synthesis analysis, and a comprehensive overview of EU initiatives in the field of collective labour law and dispute resolution. more...
