Confessions of a Video Vixen
By: Steffans, Karrine; Hunter, Karen
Published by: PerfectBound
An instant bestseller upon publication, Confessions of a Video Vixen is the page-turning memoir of Karrine Steffans: dancer, actress, and companion to many a celebrity. But more than a glimpse at what happens in the boardrooms and bedrooms of hip hop's A list, Confessions of a Video Vixen is also the first true account of how women are treated in the music industry, and its honest, direct revelations have generated debates and controversy across the country. By sharing her story, Steffans hopes to shed light on an otherwise romanticized industry and help young women avoid the same pitfalls she encountered—and if they're already in danger, she hopes to inspire them to find a way to pull themselves out of what she knows firsthand to be a cycle of hopelessness and despair.

Film And Tv Acting
By: Institute For Career Research Contributing Editors
Published by: Institute For Career Research
The most important thing to understand is that most of the actors who achieve some degree of success do so because there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD THAT THEY CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE THEMSELVES DOING. That being said, most must do a lot of grunt work type jobs: waiting tables, maid service, temping, or anything else that will pay the bills while allowing themselves flexibility in schedule, so that theres time for auditions, meetings with casting directors and agents, and working on your image. In a way, a career in acting is similar to marketing and sales. A career in TV and film acting requires you to market yourself. You must find the best and most appropriate way to present yourself to those who are hiring. True, you have to do this to get a job in any profession, but an actor will be doing this kind of self-promotion on a daily basis. Theres no such thing as job security in the world of television and film acting, so it is your job always to be on the lookout for the next assignment. Knowledge is power, so stay current on the show business trade papers, and even if youre fortunate enough to have a great agent who gets you a lot of auditions, you must do a lot of your own research. Talk to people, take classes, and be aware of the latest trends in the industry. Once you get the job, you are expected to know what youre doing. This is where the technique you develop and consistently practice (in classes, workshops, or on stage) is crucial. Most important, however, is your attitude. Many actors are jaded and bitter; its a very tough business, full of failure. But its not impossible, and youll often find that working actors are generally positive about their outlook on the business and life.
