Emergency Navigation
By: Burch, David
Published by: International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press
Find Your Way at Sea, No Matter What. “Inherently interesting and fun to read . . . provides the clearest understanding of general navigation principles we've seen yet.”--BoatU.S. “Thorough and authoritative.”-- Sea Kayaker. “A definitive work of instant appeal to seamen of all levels of experience.”--The Navigation Foundation. Every sailor knows that instruments can fail. Things get wet, break, fall overboard. Whether you’re safe on your boat or drifting in a life raft, let David Burch show you how to find your way no matter what navigational equipment you have. Often relying on common materials like a small stick, a plastic bottle, even a pair of sunglasses, Burch explains how to make use of all available means--from the ancient skills of Polynesian navigators to the contrails of airliners overhead--to calculate speed, direction, latitude, and longitude and to perform all aspects of piloting and dead reckoning.Learn how to: Steer by sun, stars, wind, and swells; Estimate current and leeway; Improvise your own knotmeter or plumb-bob sextant; Find the sun in a fogbank; Estimate latitude with a plate and a knotted string; And more vital information

Boat Watching
By: Jupp, Edmund W.
Published by: Intellect
The aim of the Watching series is to draw attention to some of the very interesting items around us, things that perhaps we don't notice as much as we might. The first was Bridge Watching, and when this was put ''on the Net'' it produced, to the surprise of the author, such a pleasant flood of e-mail that another was written, called Water Watching. This, too, was kindly received. So it was tempting to continue with the theme. Boat Watching doesn't set out to teach you how to design a boat, build a boat, or even how to use a boat. I hope it will help you to look at boats, though, really look at them, and to enjoy doing so. When I say ''boats'', I mean ''boats and things'', for boats have things on and about them, and they are all interesting. If you are looking at boats, you can't help seeing all the other things, too. Boats are truly lovely things, from the humblest to the noblest. Given a bit of time, you can lounge against a wall, or a post, or stretch out in a chair, and just drink in the happiness of looking. Looking at things is one of the great free benefits of being alive. You don't have to be an expert, but a little knowledge does help to enjoy the details. This treatment doesn't set out to turn you into a mariner or boat designer. It isn't meant intended for that kind of person. It is chiefly for idlers, loafers, those who have time to like stand and stare, or who can make such time, taking life at a reasonable pace, and enjoying it, even if only between bouts of frenzied exertions.

Desperate Hours: The Epic Rescue of the Andrea Doria
By: Goldstein, Richard
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Inc
On a summer's night in 1956, in a fog off Nantucket, the world-renowned ocean liner Andrea Doria collided with another ship, the Stockholm. Eleven hours later it sank, but in that brief time the Doria became, after the Titanic, the most storied vessel of the century, as 1,700 people were saved in an unforgettable rescue punctuated by countless acts of heroism amid confusion, terror, even cowardice.
Drawing on dozens of interviews that relate stories never before told, utilizing court documents, memoirs and reports by psychiatrists who examine survivors, and presenting technical findings shedding light on who was to blame for this disaster at sea, Richard Goldstein presents the definitive history of a fateful day, a legendary liner, and a deadly shipwreck now considered the Mount Everest of scuba diving.
