Image and Signal Processing for Networked eHealth Applications
By: Ilias Maglogiannis; Kostas Karpouzis; Manolis Wallace
Published by: Morgan & Claypool Publishers
E-Health applications facilitate the exchange of information between clinicians or between institutions, reducing costs, extending the scope and reach of medical facilities, enhancing the quality of service offered on- and off-site, and provides new means of medical supervision and preemptive medicine. Currently, the integration of medical networking and medical information systems is treated as an obvious need; standalone medical networking environments are no longer a reality and the term telemedicine is in practice used interchangeably with e-Health.
This book provides an overview of the field of Networked e-health applications and telemedicine and its supporting technologies. Chapters focus on signals, signal processing, electroencephalogram (EEG) and the Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), medical imaging, as well as a look at medical signal processing and classification from the point of view of urgent medical support, where not every possible type of medical equipment is readily available. Also covered is the encoding for transmission of medical data. Compression is of central importance, as is loss of information and ways to minimize it. The final section of the book addresses the design, implementation, and operation of e-Health systems.

Immunoinformatics
By: Novartis Foundation Symposium
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (UK)
The astounding diversity of the immune system and the complexity of its regulatory pathways makes immunology a combinatorial science. Computational analysis has therefore become an essential element of immunology research and this has led to the creation of the emerging field of immunoinformatics. This book is the first to feature thorough coverage of this new field.

Implanted Antennas in Medical Wireless Communications
By: Yahya Rahmat-Samii; Jaehoon Kim; Constantine Balanis (ed.)
Published by: Morgan & Claypool Publishers
Implanted Antennas in Medical Wireless Communications summarizes the results of recent research activities on the subject of implanted antennas for medical wireless communication systems. It is anticipated that in the near future sophisticated medical devices will be implanted inside the human body for medical telemetry and telemedicine. To establish effective and efficient wireless links with these devices, it is pivotal to give special attention to antenna designs that are low profile, small, safe, and cost effective. In this book, authors Yahya Rahmat-Samii and Jaehoon Kim demonstrate how advanced electromagnetic numerical techniques can be utilized to design these antennas in a realistic human body environment. They also show how simplified models can assist the initial designs of these antennas in an efficient manner.

Killer Lymphocytes
By: Berke, Gideon; Clark, William R.
Published by: Springer
We have known about the existence of killer lymphocytes since 1960, when they were discovered in connection with transplant rejection in vivo. Since then we have uncovered at least five subsets of lymphocytes that can kill other cells in vitro, establishing the study of cell-mediated cytotoxicity (CMC) as a major field of immunological inquiry. Berke and Clark summarize the extensive literature based on the study of CMC in vitro. Several important questions about killer cells have now been answered, for example, how they go about destroying other cells. Research ultimately revealed at least three lytic mechanisms available to killer lymphocytes. But do killer cells actually use these mechanisms in vivo? The possible involvement of CMC in transplant rejection, control of intracellular parasites, cancer, autoimmunity, and immune homeostatic regulation is analyzed in detail, yielding some surprising findings, and outlining important questions that remain unanswered.

Lab-on-chips for Cellomics
By: Andersson, Helene
Published by: Springer
The convergence of life sciences and micro/nanotechnologies is one of the fastest growing modern R and D areas with an enormous potential societal impact. Microfluidics or Lab-on-Chip (LOC) devices, also dubbed BioMEMS, are a fascinating example of this combination of two scientific areas. This book, which is the first volume entirely dedicated to microfabricated cell-based systems, will provide readers with a quick introduction to the field as well as with a variety of specific examples of such Lab-on-Chip systems for cellomics applications. It will give investigators inspiration for innovative research topics, whereas end users will be surprised about the wide variety of new and exciting applications.
