Plaque Imaging: Pixel to Molecular Level
By: S. Laxminarayan (ed.); J.S. Suri (ed.); D.L. Wilson (ed.)
Published by: IOS Press
This publication starts of with a review of plaque imaging techniques, with an introduction of the segmentation techniques for plaque classification and quantification. Many aspects of plaque imaging techniques are presented in this publication, such as; medical image retrieval and database management, MRI techniques to differentiate stable versus high risk atherosclerosis, composition and morphology of atherosclerotic plaque, analysis of the soft tissue based on computer vision techniques, modelling of coronary artery biomechanics, Cardiac CT for the assessment of cardiovascular pathology with an emphasis on the detection of coronary atherosclerosis, technical and practical issues regarding coronary atherosclerotic plaque imaging by CT (focussing on coronary calcium imaging), feasibility of a non-invasive, in vivo determination of the IBS of arterial wall tissue, high resolution ultrasound images of carotid plaques, the problem of reliable features extraction and classification process and a discussion on advanced mathematical techniques to extract spectral information from the RF data to determine the plaque composition.

Practical Guide to Clinical Computing Systems
By: Payne, Thomas H.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
The development of clinical computing systems is a rapidly growing priority area of health information technology, spurred in large measure by robust funding at the federal and state levels. It is widely recognized as one of the key components for reducing costs and improving the quality of care. At the same time as more and more hospitals and clinics are installing clinical computing systems, major issues related to design, operations, and infrastructure remain to be resolved. This book tackles these critical topics, including system selection, configuration, installation, user support, interface engines, and long-term operation. It also familiarizes the reader with regulatory requirements, budgetary issues, and other aspects of this new electronic age of healthcare delivery. It begins with an introduction to clinical computing and definition of key terminology. The next several chapters talk about system architecture and interface design, followed by detailed discussion of all aspects of operations. Attention is then given to the realities of leadership, planning, oversight, budgeting, and employee recruitment. This invaluable resource includes a special section that talks about career development for students and others interested in entering the field.

Promises and Limits of Reductionism in the Biomedical Sciences
By: Regenmortel, Marc H. V. Van (ed.); Hull, David L. (ed.)
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (UK)
Reductionism as a scientific methodology has been extraordinarily successful in biology. However, recent developments in molecular biology have shown that reductionism is seriously inadequate in dealing with the mind-boggling complexity of integrated biological systems. Biomolecules are not only very complicated molecular machines but are the results of the whole evolutionary history of life. Earlier enthusiasm for the reduction of biology to chemistry and physics has given place to the appreciation of biology as an essentially historical discipline that requires functional and not only structural explanations.

The Science and Ethics of Engineering the Human Germ Line
By: Gordon, Jon W.
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (US)
With implications that go to the core of what it means to be human, the issues raised by genetic manipulation - especially cloning - have sparked a passionate debate among governmental, religious, and scientific quarters, as well as the media and the general public. Keeping to the actual science rather than speculation is of the utmost importance for an enlightened approach to this weighty discussion.
In clear, lively prose, The Science and Ethics of Engineering the Human Germ Line: Mendel's Maze provides an authoritative treatment of the principles of science and bioethics that bear upon such technologies as germ-line insertion and cloning. It offers a realistic assessment of possible applications, limitations, and new developments likely to arise in these areas.

Sensory Organ Replacement and Repair
By: Gerald Miller; John Enderle (ed.)
Published by: Morgan & Claypool Publishers
The senses of human hearing and sight are often taken for granted by many individuals until they are lost or adversely affected. Millions of individuals suffer from partial or total hearing loss and millions of others have impaired vision. The technologies associated with augmenting these two human senses range from simple hearing aids to complex cochlear implants, and from (now commonplace) intraocular lenses to complex artificial corneas. The areas of human hearing and human sight will be described in detail with the associated array of technologies also described.

Signal Processing of Random Physiological Signals
By: Charles Lessard; John Enderle (ed.)
Published by: Morgan & Claypool Publishers
Signal Processing of Random Physiological Signals presents the most widely used techniques in signal and system analysis. Specifically, the book is concerned with methods of characterizing signals and systems. Author Charles Lessard provides students and researchers an understanding of the time and frequency domain processes which may be used to evaluate random physiological signals such as brainwave, sleep, respiratory sounds, heart valve sounds, electromyograms, and electro-oculograms.
Another aim of the book is to have the students evaluate actual mammalian data without spending most or all of their time writing software programs. Lessard recommends the DADiSP digital signal processing software, which allows students to view process steps in a real-time window with little training. Extensive programming ability is not necessary if an individual wishes to apply basic signal processing principles. However, individuals should have sufficient working knowledge of mathematics through calculus, some physiology, and be familiar with the elements of circuit theory (both loop and node equations for passive and active circuits).
