Developing an Outstanding Core Collection
By: Alabaster, Carol
Published by: ALA Editions

''Creating an adult core collection for a public library is an extremely complex and challenging endeavor.''—from the Preface. This practical handbook offers step-by-step instructions on not only how to build a core collection from scratch but also how to maintain and revitalize an existing collection. Building on the basics, this comprehensive guide to core collection development offers ready-to-use advice on developing a collection policy statement, selecting user-appropriate sources, and ultimately serving your constituency with the best possible collection. With an eye toward quality and years of collection development and reviewing experience, collection expert Carol Alabaster answers the key questions such as:. What criteria are used to identify a core title?. What is the process for making selections?. From A to Z, how is a collection maintained and improved?. How are titles continuously tracked?. What methodologies will make decisions less subjective?. Packed with selection resources and sample core lists in seven subject areas, all libraries can use this soup-to-nuts manual to revitalize or start up an up-to-date and customer-focused core collection. more...

As national library, the British Library (BL) has the ethical and legal responsibility to acquire, preserve and make available all printed material published in the UK. Digital preservation and libraries
By: Cox, Mr Andrew (ed.)
Published by: Emerald Group Publishing

The concept of representation format permeates all technical aspects of digital repository architecture and is, therefore, the foundation of many, if not all, digital preservation activities. Digital formats need to be understood both as general classes of encodings and in the specific instances of digital objects. The Digital Library Foundation (DLF) has sponsored an initial investigation into the creation of a global digital format registry (GDRF) to maintain format representation information. Using such information, ancillary tools and services can be created for additional repository and preservation-related functions such as format-specific object identification, validation, and characterization. JSTOR and the Harvard University Library are cooperating on the development of an extensible format validation framework called JHOVE. This paper introduces both the GDFR and JHOVE projects. more...

Digital reference service
By: Chowdhury, Dr Gobinda (ed.)
Published by: Emerald Group Publishing

It has become increasingly common for libraries to provide a reference service which operates via e-mail or through online forms. This paper compares the performance of three digital reference services available on the World Wide Web, namely, AllExperts, Ask a Librarian, and Internet Public Library (a fourth service, Ask Bob, was included initially but eventually excluded). The online digital reference/‘‘expert’’ services are generally very effective; most provide an answer within three days, and include suggestions for sources of further information. Although the general response rate from all the services was good, library-based services were found to be more trustworthy since they provided the answers together with the sources. more...
